16 geting on the road

by spikezx14 on Fri Sep 18, 2009 10:11 am

Ok my youngest lad who is 16, wants a bike to get him to college cant fault it Thing is I have been away from small bikes for an age so I have no idea of the cost of insurance etc or the going rate for 50cc bike, CBT etc. Kit I know about about its just the cost of getting on the road.

Oh and if anyone knows of a bike going cheap that wont let him down let me know ta

All depends on what he wants. A moped will be cheaper to buy and insure than a geared 50cc.

I'm not sure about geared bikes but my brother got his moped in March. You'll easily get a moped for under £1000. It all depends on what sort he wants the Yamaha Aerox and Peugeot Speedfight are the most popular. Although the Piagio NRG is getting more popular. It all depends on the mileage, condition etc just have a nose on ebay.

I think my brothers CBT was around £100, probably under that. Hunt around, prices vary for every place. His insurance was about £230-£250 I think TPFT, garaged on a 07moped.

Hope this helps. Phil.

My CBT (3 years ago and on a 125, not a 50 but he's got them as well) was £85 with Mick of M.I.C.K.S. in Lynn, very experienced instructor, taught my dad to ride over 20 years ago, and got me through my test after 8 hours of lessons with 1 minor. You just have to live with his smoker's cough in your ear most the time you're riding.

Also we had a lad in for work experience from the college, the college had paid for his scooter, not sure whether the college owned it or bought it for him, he just had to put the fuel in it so he reckoned, might have had to replace tyres etc., he hadn't done many miles, but you'd have to pay for them if it was your bike anyway.
It's not the ride, it's the rider.
